Oh, the many holes you could fall into trying to research the general idea of “getting organized.” Everyone has their tricks and hacks. You could be on Pinterest all day and not exhaust what’s there. But you just need to know where to start. You just want the basics. Try these to tips to get started, and your housekeeper will thank you!

Put It Away

Immediately. When you finish using something, put it where it belongs. You know you aren’t going to “do it later,” as you promise yourself. It just takes a second to put your clothes away or in the laundry when you get changed instead of just throwing them on the floor. Finished folding the laundry? Put it on the floor or put it away. Putting it away takes just about the same amount of energy.

Make a Home

A place for everything, and everything in its place. It’s a good rule to live by. Gather up all the “stuff” that’s just lying around. If you can sort it all into groups, so much the better. Then put the groups into separate, labeled containers. If you only have one group of various items, that container becomes your new junk drawer (or box). You may get excited enough about this process to go around your home and find more items for each category to add to the containers.

Don’t Buy It

Some of us have a habit of buying everything we think is cute. Stop and think before you buy. Do you have a place to put the cute item? Will it be useful or will it sit out? Or worse, will it sit out and never be used? Is there a place for it when it’s not being used? If you say no to any of these questions, you don’t need to buy it. And look, you’ve just saved some money, too!

Being able to look around and see less mess in your home has been proven in studies to alleviate stress. Get started on the right path by making sure you have a place for everything!
